Lake Norman
Lake Norman is a beautiful lake in the piedmont region of North Carolina, very close to Charlotte NC. Part of the lake crosses a small eastern portion of Lincoln County and is an important resource for our area. Some call Lake Norman, the “inland sea” as it offers over 520 miles of shoreline and has a total surface area of more than 50 square miles. Created between 1959 and 1964 by Duke Power, Lake Norman supplies water to areas in Lincoln County, Mooresville, and throughout the Charlotte metro region. Lake Norman has contributed a great deal to the community's economy, and there are several beautiful Lake Norman Developments and Neighborhoods here. You’ll find gorgeous lake homes which serve as vacation and primary residences for those lucky enough to call the lake home. Rural farm communities like Huntersville, Mooresville, and Cornelius are now chic communities and residential neighborhoods, and the lake contributes a great deal to this drastic change in demographic.

Lake Norman is a beautifully clean lake and is a popular boating location. Annual boat shows, fishing tournaments and even the Jet Sport Boat’s Association tour regularly feature annual events on Lake Norman. The lake is also a popular lake for fishing, wakeboarding and waterskiing enthusiasts. There are several great shops and lake restaurants located right on the water as well, creating a great atmosphere during the warm, sunny months.

Lake Norman State Park is a great park region on Lake Norman that is a great place to hike, fish, canoe, camp, as well as swim and waterski. Formerly known as Duke Power State Park, this area is located on the northern shore of Lake Norman around the mouth of Hicks Creek. The 125 yard long beach is open each day for swimming, and rowboat and canoe rentals are available at the park. The park is known for its superb camping area that features 33 campsites with tent pads and a picnic table area, making it the perfect location to camp out at the lake.

Fishermen love the state park, as they can fish for a variety of different species that call Lake Norman home. Yellow perch, crappie, bluegill, striped bass, and largemouth bass are regularly caught by those fishing on the lake. Hikers can explore the land surrounding Lake Norman by hiking the Lake Shore Trail, a 5 mile trail that starts along the shoreline of Lake Norman. The Itusi Trail is an excellent mountain biking trail, with 6.7 miles of mountain biking designated and maintained by the Tar Heel Trailblazers, a Charlotte area mountain biking club.

Wildlife flourishes at Lake Norman State Park, however visitors must be patient if they want to catch a glimpse of some of the many animals that live in the park. Spend some time in the solitary areas of the park and you might get to see a white tailed deer, red or gray fox, rabbits, raccoons, and several varieties of amphibians and reptiles. Bird watchers enjoy seeing the Carolina chickadees, pine warblers, red-tailed hawks, osprey, mallards, geese and herons that fly and nest in the park.
